Don't forget: QAE's got talent and it'll be on full display on Wednesday evening. Join us at the QA Community Center: doors open at 5 p.m., show starts at 5:30 p.m. Third graders have been organizing it and can't wait to share with you!
WHO ARE YOUR HOSTS? The third grade talent show club has been working hard to make this event special! WHERE: At the Queen Anne Community Center, in the gym TIME: Doors open at 5 p.m., and the show starts promptly at 5:30 p.m. We are working hard to end the show by 8:30 p.m. COST: The show is free! But the talent show club decided they would like to collect any donations you’d like to give to Dwankhozi, and they will have a table for this in the lobby! WILL THERE BE FOOD? Yes! Across the hall from the gym, the 4th graders will be selling food to raise money for IslandWood. The 4th graders are planning on selling sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, chips, popcorn, candy, water, juice boxes, and baked goods. Dinner is covered! Food sales will only be from 5-5:30, and during intermission. ANYTHING ELSE? Yes, so glad you asked! We are asking that parents not leave their kids unattended during the show, as it’s distracting for the performers and we’re hoping to keep a quieter show environment this year. We will have all lights off except the stage lights this year, which also will make moving around during the show dangerous. We know it’s a long time for little ones to keep still, so you are welcome to accompany them to the hallway or outside if they need a break. WHAT IF MY CHILD IS PERFORMING? WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? Please have your child ready to check in at 5 p.m. This is particularly important if they are in the early grades, as they will likely be at the start of the show. Our greeting committee will give them further instructions then about where they need to wait, when they will go on, etc. See the Talent Show page for more details... McClure Middle School is having an end-of-the-year BBQ and wants to invite 5th grade families that have students attending McClure next year. It is a very laid back celebration with grilled hot dogs for sale. Some staff will be there. A chance to mingle mainly with families and pick up the summer reading lists. Thursday, June 8th from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the McClure courtyard.

This message was sent from the QAE PTSA to our community on Friday, March 24th. We hope to see you at the meeting on March 29th! See the Boundaries and Option Status FAQ page for more details...
Dear Queen Anne Elementary families, If you believe that Queen Anne Elementary should continue to be an Option School located at its current site on Boston Street, please attend a meeting at QAE on Wed. March 29th, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Wait, what??? In the 2018-2019 school year, Seattle Public Schools will reopen Magnolia Elementary School. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) has worked with the city to plan and coordinate Magnolia as an attendance area school. SPS is having community meetings to engage families as it redraws the boundaries of Blaine, Lawton, and Coe to balance enrollment and alleviate capacity issues at each existing school. At the first community meeting, on March 13th, SPS presented six scenarios of different boundary lines. Four of those scenarios would mean that some students who live on the west side of Queen Anne hill and are currently zoned for Coe would be part of the new Magnolia School zone. At that meeting and also in emails directly to SPS, a group of parents (not from QAE) who want to prevent changes to the current Coe boundaries have suggested that QAE be changed from an Option program to a neighborhood school. Other parents have suggested that the QAE Option program be moved to the Magnolia School when it opens in Sept. 2018 so the QAE campus can be used as a neighborhood school. If QAE was changed from an Option School to a neighborhood school the innovative programs that QAE offers might be at risk. Option School status provides "programs of choice" and for QAE that includes our 5 Pillars and technology focus. No decisions have been made, but our community coming together on March 29th, being present and participating in this important conversation will relate a strong and clear message to SPS that we’re invested in decisions that affect our school and families. The not-so-distant future of QAE is dependent on our parent voices now. Principal Janine Roy, Central Region Executive Director of Schools Sarah Pritchett, SPS Director of Enrollment Planning and the QAE PTSA Board will all be in attendance. SPS Director Sue Peters has been invited to the meeting. We hope to see you at the important meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29th at the QAE Cafeteria. The PTSA has created a FAQ page with more details about how we got here, our concerns, details about our Option program. The 4th Grade is raising funds towards Islandwood 2017 with a special restaurant night (and day) at Thackeray in Fremont. Just mention "Queen Anne Elementary" when you order and 10% of the proceeds will be donated. It’s available all day long: brunch or dinner, as well as take-out. See the Thackeray site for their menu and hours. Hope to see you and your family enjoying food and supporting QAE on Sunday, Feb. 26th!
KING5 Meteorologist Rhonda A. Lee gave a great shout-out to Queen Anne Elementary and our 5th grade classes after visiting the school this week! Rhonda was there to talk about diversity in the sciences. All are welcome at our Winter QAE PTSA general meeting. It's at the cafeteria on Wednesday, Feb. 8th from 6:30-8 p.m. Childcare will be available in the library. We'll be covering some important topics, with a focus on the future of the Enrichment program at QAE and school funding.
Help Us Brainstorm on Enrichment Classes at QAE As our Enrichment registrations have significantly increased this year, this creates challenges for running a fulfilling, safe, and fair program on a daily basis. Please join us to discuss our Enrichment successes, hopes, concerns, obstacles, and possibilities for the program. We know enrichment classes are an important part of many families' QAE experience and want to hear your thoughts on how we can have a sustainable program as we plan for next year and beyond. Legislative Update - School Funding There's lots going on in the legislative arena, including the QAE PTSA Board of Directors endorsing full funding of education, the "levy cliff", creative approach status, and option school status. Come join us to learn more about these topics and continue the discussion of what we can do about them. Grab some FREE pizza and let's focus on parenting topics that are timely and important to YOU. Sibling rivalry? Getting out the door in the morning? What’s your parenting challenge lately? Bring it!
ParentNet is an open space for Kindergarten through 2nd grade families to discuss everyday parenting topics or challenges in a supportive community. And if you bring a parent who’s new to ParentNet, you’ll both be entered to win a $15 Menschie’s gift card! See you Wednesday, Jan. 25th from 6:30-8:30 at the QAE Library! Learn more on the QAE ParentNet website. Six teams of 4th and 5th grade students will be participating in QAE’s first annual Global Reading Challenge! Among the goals of the GRC are to motivate children to read, develop teamwork and cooperative thinking skills, and have fun. Each year, students from across the city read up to 10 books selected by Seattle librarians and participate in weekly meetings to study these books with their teammates. After several months of hard work and preparation, our teams are ready to compete in a quiz-show style contest at QAE! Our winning team will advance to compete with teams from other schools across the city. The program will end with an All-City Final that will take place at the downtown Central Library.
If your child is participating in GRC this year, please join us for our In-School Competition, which will be held in QAE’s cafeteria on Tuesday, Feb. 7th beginning at 8:30 a.m. We are so proud of all of our 4th and 5th grade participants! On January 26th, children's author Javaka Steptoe will be visiting Queen Anne Elementary as part of the Multicultural Children’s Literature Celebration week. Javaka’s latest book Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean Michel-Basquiat has received many starred reviews, has landed on multiple year- end, best-of lists and is widely considered to be a strong contender for ALA awards. If you'd like to pre-order signed copies of any of Javaka's books, please fill out and return the order form to your child's teachers by January 19th (available below). 20% of book sales will be used to purchase multicultural literature for several low income, high free & reduced lunch schools in Seattle that have no library budget.
The Levy Cliff: SPS and School Districts statewide are approaching a "levy cliff", an upcoming reduction in how much money school districts can collect through local property tax levies. You may have seen Superintendent Nyland’s letter about it. In SPS the levy cliff is projected to mean a budget shortfall of $74 million dollars and has the potential to translate to 440 staff positions cut across our District and 98 schools. If the levy cliff happens, QAE would face a big reduction to next year's school budget. What can we do? 1. Call our Legislators of the 36th District and Governor Inslee: Did you know our Legislators do not get calls and emails in volume over the issue of fully funding public education in Washington State? We must send a respectful message that we care about the issue of fully funding public education and request a levy cliff extension for the 2017-2018 school year. Put it on your calendar to call once a week if possible. Speak from the heart. Pass this information along on FB, Twitter, and to other friends you know in the 36th District. 36th District Contact info:
2. Attend SCPTSA Community Budget Gap Meeting: Seattle Schools staff will explain the budget numbers. PTA members and the community will have a chance to collaborate on actions we can take together to motivate the Legislature to act. Meeting Dates:
3. Attend Focus Day in Olympia: Washington’s Paramount Duty, NAACP, and WEA are co-sponsoring a rally to demand that our state fully fund public education now! Event Details: Dr. Martin Luther King Day: Monday January 16, 2017 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Washington State Capital 416 Sid Snyder Ave SW, Olympia, Washington 98504 If you're interested in learning more about the levy cliff situation, check out these articles:
From QAE PTSA Technology Advisor Julie Smith:
This week QAE students got to practice all 5 of our pillars and rocked the Hour of Code! We had over 400 QAE kids join with tens of millions of kids around the world coding, helping other kids, tweeting our participation, and having fun. Thank you to our amazing school community for your help, support, and participation - our kids were both excited and engaged throughout the day! Our fantastic volunteers made the day run incredibly smoothly (and thanks to those who made sure our volunteers and teachers were well fed!). Special thanks to all the teachers for working this into their busy schedules, sacrificing the teachers' lounges, and helping to get our kids excited about learning these critical 21st Century Skills. Now to continue the momentum...below there are a number of suggestions for how to continue to engage your children in coding and software development including resources and classes for both online, individualized and classroom/camp settings. In addition the parent technology committee will be working with our staff technology committee to find more ways to continue to support these critical thinking and problem solving skills and tools in our classrooms. If you are interested in getting involved in the parent technology committee, please email [email protected].
