All are welcome at Tuesday's parent education event on "Creating Community while Navigating Identity Politics." The talk will be facilitated by Amy Pak and Marquita Prinzing from Families of Color Seattle (FOCS). The event will take place from 6-8:30 pm at the QAE Library.
Our 4th annual QAE Hour of Code is on Wednesday, Dec. 7th. Hour of Code is a North America-wide event to help students understand how to create their own computer codes and engage in the problem solving and logic that underlies it. QAE is again joining in on the The Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week. More than 100 million students have participated already (and our kids are among them!) Living in a world surrounded by technology, we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. Only a small fraction of students are learning computer science, and fewer students are studying it than a decade ago (and women account for only 12% of computer science degrees).
The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Here’s a video to get you inspired! To accomplish our goal of everyone at Queen Anne Elementary coding, we need parent help! Here’s how you can get involved: 1. Talk about software development and coding with your kids. How does software impact the work you do? How does it impact the world around them? Get them excited about this critical field and its applications. 2. Volunteer to help on Wednesday, December 7th. We need morning volunteers, sign up to volunteer... 3. Learn some coding skills. Go to code.org and Khan Academy and take a few introductory or advanced coding classes on your own and with your kid(s) 4. Sign up to bring snacks in for the volunteers and staff on December 7th. Fed parents are happy! 5. Tell others about the Hour of Code... friends, family, grandparents. Get them excited and involved. Encourage others to sign up themselves, their kids, and their schools to participate in this movement to bring 21st century skills to all kids. Get more info on the Hour of Code site. Thank you for all your support and help as we introduce our kids to the skills they need to flourish in the 21st Century. We learn everywhere, we learn together! Come for the donuts, cider and pie. Stay for the weeds!
Our garden needs to get ready for the winter! That means we need as many adult helping hands as possible!! Get ready to cut old growth back, turn soil, plant bulbs and spread mulch. A huge thank you to Five Corners Hardware who is donating and delivering mulch for us! Bring your bulbs!! (School colors, purple and orange would be great but all colors of course are welcome!!) We'll also be collecting non-perishables for NW Harvest at the party. Kiddos are encouraged to come. See the Gather at the Garden page for more details... Unfortunately, we need to postpone QAE Game night which had been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10th. There is a conflict in scheduling at the QA Community Center, so we'll be rescheduling it for sometime in 2017.
Our apologies for the delay. Hope you still find some time to gather with family and friends to play something fun! It's the spookiest time of the year! The annual tradition continues as our community has its Halloween Parade and class celebrations on Monday. We'll be parading around the school grounds this year. Classes will meet on the blacktop and the parade begins at 12:30 pm. with our Kindergarteners leading the way. In case of rain, we'll gather in the indoor play area. Parents and families are welcome to come watch the parade. Our 2nd graders will be inviting neighbors as part of their 'Neighborhoods and Community' curriculum. Teachers will escort their students back to their rooms for class parties from 1-2 p.m. School dismissal the usual 2:05 p.m. time. Class parties are planned individually, so if you'd like to help out please contact your classroom coordinator or teacher. A couple details to make sure the kids remain safe while having tons of fun: it's a regular school day in the morning, so make sure your child's costume doesn't stop them from learning. We love costumes, but please leave toy guns at home. Also, costume masks shouldn't be worn throughout the day (we can save them for the parade). Have a happy Halloween and don't each too much of your kid's candy! Neighborhood haunt Targy's will be hosted a Halloween party on Friday, October 28th. There's no cover charge but they'll be collecting donations at the door that will be split between Hay, Coe and QAE. Proceeds to our school will go towards the 4th graders' trip to IslandWood next year. There's no obligation to donate though, it's meant to be a casual costume party to build community. The DJ's include a QAE parent! What is positive discipline? Why is it good for my child? Will it work in my family? What does it look like at QAE?
Join us for a conversation lead by our very own school psychologist Julietta Skoog. This is a great opportunity to learn how to teach kids important social and life skills based on encouragement and mutual respect. Ms. Skoog is a certified Positive Discipline trainer with over 10 years experience working with student in Seattle Public Schools. Hope to see you on Wednesday, Oct. 19th, 6:30p.m. at the QAE Cafeteria! All QAE families welcome -- this conversation is for families from all grade levels. Childcare is available for kids 4 years and up, for a suggested donation of $10 a family. What is ParentNet? At ParentNet meetings, parents of children in the same grade level meet up for meaningful conversation about their kids and parenting. Parents lead the meetings, pick the topics, and do all the talking. It’s fun! See the ParentNet site for more details... About Juliette Skoog Julietta has been a school psychologist and counselor with Seattle Public Schools for over ten years, supporting schools including Graham Hill, Muir, McDonald, John Rogers, Dunlap and Salmon Bay K-8. She loved the Social Emotional Learning program and has focused on building it at our school. She is also a certified Positive Discipline Trainer, offering parenting classes for parents and trainings for teachers and parent educators. See Julietta's site to learn more... What Is Social Emotional Learning? Social Emotional Learning is a process of developing social and emotional skills, for academic success as well as life success.
